When you think about adoption, what do you imagine? If you think about a mother anonymously placing her baby on a doorstep, this couldn’t be further from today’s adoption!
Modern adoption is all about fulfilling what you desire for your child. Do you want your child to have siblings? A large family? To be raised with certain religious beliefs? You get to choose when you pick the adoptive family.
How Does Adoption Work?
When you choose adoption, you will work with an adoption agency or attorney to create an adoption plan. This is a customizable document that outlines what you want to happen.
Adoption plans fall into one of three categories:
- Open Adoption: As the name suggests, this is the most flexible and open type of adoption. With open adoption, you can choose to have an ongoing relationship with the adoptive family and child through communication (whether in-person through visits or by phone or email).
- Semi-Open Adoption: This is similar to open adoption, but instead, all communication is mediated by a third party, like the adoption agency or attorney. This protects your contact information, which might be essential if you need to protect your information.
- Closed Adoption: This is the most restricted plan. With closed adoption, you and the adoptive family remain anonymous. Most adoptions today are open, but closed adoption might work for you if you need to protect your identifying information or child for some reason.
